Fun in the sun can quickly turn into red in the face! In addition to redness, overdoing it outdoors without the proper protection can lead to dryness, irritation, and wrinkles in the long run. Now is the time to avoid damaging your skin so that you can enjoy glowing skin for many years to come.
We’ve put together one of our favorite hydrating, healing, and soothing mask for the days when you get a little carried away. First, let’s explore the three ingredients that go into this magic mixture and see how they comfort your skin from the sun’s rays.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera is a staple in many skin care routines. Made up of 99% water, it is extremely hydrating – exactly what your skin needs when the sun has dried it out beyond your control. Aloe is also full of agents that heal, protect, and stimulate antioxidant production. It can help neutralize free radicals, break down inflammation, and nourish skin. Pretty much everything your skin is in need of after a day of laying out in the sun.
MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) is a little lesser known than aloe. It’s a sulfur compound commonly found in foods including raw fruits and green vegetables, meat, eggs, seafood, raw milk, coffee, and tea. Since sulfur is used at the cellular level, it’s often overlooked. But this tiny little fighter is found in the skin, hair, nails, joints, and connective tissues. It plays a large role in the production of collagen and keratin – both big players in the skin game. It comes in a white, odorless, water-soluble form so it’s easily incorporated into any DIY solution.
As a natural compound found in comfrey root and chamomile, it’s known for being soothing and healing. Inflamed, irritated, and all-around angry skin is the perfect surface for this solution to get to work in. Helping with healing the skin barrier, stimulating tissue repair, soothing skin conditions, exfoliating skin cells, and retaining water, this compound rounds out the list of ingredients to turn to when beach day goes too far.
Putting It All Together
By mixing these three powerful ingredients, you can have a simple yet fierce face mask for even the most sun-soaked skin. Using 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 1 tablespoon of MSM powder, and ¼ teaspoon of allantoin powder, combine the mixture in a bowl. After allowing them to dissolve into each other for 30 minutes, layer it on your face and feel the coolness bring your skin back to normal.
